The Unknown Bureaucrat consists of a man in a suit carved from volcanic stone, his upper body emerging from a raw, unfinished block of basalt. He sits near the shore, gripping a briefcase while his head disappears entirely into the heavy, unhewn rock. Artist Magnus Tomasson installed this piece in nineteen ninety-four to honor the tireless, anonymous workers who keep government running. He left the stone rough to represent the stifling nature of red tape and the weight of endless paperwork.
