Sun Voyager

The Sun Voyager sits on the Reykjavík waterfront as a skeleton of a ship made from polished steel. Jón Gunnar Árnason created the sculpture to capture the spirit of an undiscovered land, a dream of hope and progress. In nineteen eighty-six, the city held a competition to celebrate its two hundredth anniversary, and his design won. The sculpture points north toward the horizon, its form caught between a Viking longship and a celestial vessel, resting on a granite circle etched with waves.
