Reykjavík City Hall

Reykjavík City Hall sits half-submerged in the northern edge of the Lake Tjörnin, appearing to float upon the dark water. Designed by architects Studio Granda, the concrete structure earned immediate controversy when it opened in nineteen ninety-two. Residents clashed over its stark, brutalist aesthetic, which interrupted the traditional wooden charm of the city center. At the time, locals protested that the heavy, modern silhouette felt like an intrusion. Today, a massive three-dimensional relief map of Iceland occupies the main exhibition hall inside.
