Gröndalshús

The dark wood siding and white trim of Gröndalshús stand out among the modern buildings of downtown Reykjavik. This house belonged to Benedikt Gröndal, a nineteenth century poet and scholar who spent his final years here surrounded by his massive collection of books and manuscripts. He famously claimed he kept his library in order by memory alone, even when the stacks grew chaotic. Today, the building serves as a small cultural space, though the cramped, sloping rooms still hold the quiet of a writer.
