Lækjartorg

Lækjartorg features a wide, paved square centered around a statue of Hannes Hafstein, Iceland's first minister. It sits where the Lækur stream once flowed toward the harbor, carrying water that powered the city's early development. During the nineteen thirties, the city buried the stream in pipes to accommodate growing traffic, creating this open plaza in the process. Today, the square serves as the primary meeting point for protests and celebrations, holding the weight of Iceland’s political history in its stones.
