Tjörnin

The dark, glass-like surface of Tjörnin sits at the heart of the city, framed by a mix of colorful corrugated iron houses and steep-roofed stone buildings. This pond is the remnants of an estuary, slowly pushed back from the sea by earthworks over the last century. When the winter temperatures drop, the water freezes solid enough for locals to lace up their skates. In the summer of nineteen forty-one, a British soldier famously jumped onto a floating ice floe here to rescue a drowning dog.
