Ōte-mon Gate

The Ote-mon Gate stands as the primary entrance to the inner citadel of Osaka Castle, defined by its massive stone walls and a heavy, iron-plated wooden door. When Tokugawa Hidetada rebuilt the castle in the sixteen-twenties, he installed this gate to project the absolute authority of the shogunate. The central stone lintel above the gate weighs over forty tons. A single block of granite that size serves as a silent, crushing warning to any army hoping to force their way inside.
