Monument to the Fatherland

The Monumento a la Patria features a massive, hand-carved stone facade covered in hundreds of intricate relief figures representing the history of Mexico. Rómulo Rozo, a Colombian sculptor, spent eleven years carving these walls directly in place using local limestone. He lived inside the monument throughout the construction process, surrounded by scaffolding and dust. While other monuments rely on poured concrete or bronze casting, this structure remains a singular example of direct stone carving on a monumental scale in the mid twentieth century.
