The Casas Gemelas, or Twin Houses, stand out for their matching French neoclassical facades on the Paseo de Montejo. Built between nineteen oh six and nineteen eleven, these limestone mansions reflect the immense wealth generated by the henequen industry, which once made Mérida the city with the most millionaires per capita in the world. Their architect, Gustave Umbdenstock, designed them as private residences for the Cámara brothers. One brother filled his side with European art, while the other preferred a more austere, private collection.
