Catedral de San Ildefonso

The Cathedral of San Ildefonso features two high, square towers flanking a austere Renaissance facade. Built on the site of a Mayan temple, workers used stones from the demolished structures of T’ho to construct these walls in the late sixteenth century. When the building neared completion, the architect Pedro de Aulestia reportedly faced a shortage of funds and had to melt down the church's silver plates to pay the masons. It remains the oldest cathedral on the mainland of the Americas.
