Museo Casa Montejo

The ornate stone facade of Casa Montejo features two conquistadors standing atop the heads of defeated indigenous people, a direct statement of conquest carved in sixteen forty-nine. Francisco de Montejo commissioned this house as the headquarters for his family after they founded the city of Mérida. While the family moved out long ago, the carving remains one of the few examples of colonial plateresque art in Mexico. It serves as the physical anchor for the Montejo dynasty's claim to this land.
