Restos de decoraciones mayas

The facade here holds stone carvings pulled directly from ancient Maya structures. When colonial builders arrived in the sixteenth century, they dismantled nearby temples to clear space for the new city of Mérida. Instead of discarding the carved limestone blocks, the Spanish laborers repurposed them as structural fill and decorative accents for their own townhouses. You see a series of faces and geometric patterns embedded into the rough wall, looking slightly out of place among the later Spanish architectural flourishes.
