Merida City Hall

The two-story building with the long, arched portico facing the Plaza Grande is the Mérida City Hall. It occupies the site of the original sixteenth-century Spanish town council, but the current structure dates to the early twentieth century. In nineteen twenty-eight, officials installed a large bronze clock in the central tower to mark the city's four hundredth anniversary. That clock remains the town's official timekeeper, still chiming across the square just as it did when the building was brand new.
