The Vondelpark Openluchttheater stands out for its curved, wooden stage canopy that juts out over a wide, grassy amphitheater. Since nineteen seventy-four, this sunken bowl has functioned as a public stage for everything from opera to stand-up comedy. It began as a modest wooden platform, but it quickly became the summer beating heart of the park. In the eighties, local theater groups fought hard to keep the performances free, eventually forcing the city to commit to the current structure.
