Spuistraat 199

other

The building at Spuistraat one ninety-nine stands out because of the jagged, black steel scaffolding that wraps around its facade like a cage. This structure originated as a squat in the late twentieth century, when artists and activists occupied the space to resist city redevelopment plans. In nineteen eighty-eight, residents installed this metal frame to prevent the police from easily entering the building during attempted evictions. It remains a physical record of the intense battles over housing rights in Amsterdam.
