Halvemaansbrug

The Halvemaansbrug consists of a distinctive arched iron frame that spans the canal, connecting the Halvemaansteeg to the Kloveniersburgwal. It replaces a series of older wooden crossings that served this narrow passage for centuries. City officials commissioned the current structure in the late nineteenth century to accommodate growing foot traffic in the historic center. During the colder winter months, ice sometimes gathers against the central piers, a recurring challenge that crews have managed since the bridge first opened to the public.
