Agnietenkapel

The Agnietenkapel is a narrow, brick-walled chapel tucked away behind a modest gate on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. It served as the birthplace of the University of Amsterdam in sixteen thirty-two. When the city’s Athenaeum Illustre opened here, the first lecture was delivered by Gerardus Vossius. He stood before his students and insisted that the pursuit of knowledge required absolute intellectual freedom. That declaration eventually defined the university’s reputation for defying authority, starting with local church officials who questioned the school's curriculum.
