The Trippenhuis on the Kloveniersburgwal features two identical houses built behind a single, massive facade that spans the canal. Louis and Hendrick Trip, two brothers who made a fortune in the seventeenth century trading iron and weapons, commissioned the architect Justus Vingboons to construct this residence. They embedded cannon barrels into the stone facade, mimicking the appearance of artillery pieces. A local story claims the brothers' personal coachman noticed these iron ornaments and insisted they looked like guns, prompting the brothers to embrace the aesthetic.
