Muiderpoort

The Muiderpoort stands at the edge of the old city as a heavy stone gateway topped with a decorative pediment featuring carved weapons and military trophies. It served as one of the main entries to Amsterdam for travelers arriving from the east. In seventeen seventy-seven, the city council commissioned this structure to replace a decaying wooden gate. When Napoleon Bonaparte visited the city in eighteen eleven, he passed through this stone archway with his imperial procession to receive the keys to the capital.
