Artisplein

Artisplein serves as the public entrance to the Royal Zoo in Amsterdam. It is recognizable by the striking, oversized statues of a red deer and a rhinoceros that anchor the open square. While the zoo itself dates back to eighteen thirty-eight, this specific plaza was created much later to reconnect the animal grounds with the city streets. In the nineteen thirties, the zoo was enclosed behind walls, but this redesign reopened the view, allowing passersby to see into the park once again.
