Jewish Museum

Four seventeenth-century synagogues stand together here, connected by a high-walled courtyard in the heart of the old Jewish quarter. They housed the Ashkenazi community for three hundred years, surviving the upheaval of the second world war, though the neighborhood around them was largely emptied. Inside, the Great Synagogue still retains the heavy brass chandeliers and wooden benches from sixteen seventy-one. When the congregation outgrew the space, they simply built another synagogue right next door, eventually linking all four into one complex.
