Oude Kerk Amsterdam

The Oude Kerk features a jagged, dark spire that rises abruptly above the tightly packed houses of the Red Light District. It began as a wooden chapel in the thirteenth century before evolving into the city's first parish church. Sailors once laid their dead beneath the floorboards here, resulting in a stone pavement composed entirely of worn gravestones. Rembrandt famously frequented this space to baptize his children and bury his wife, Saskia, who rests under a slab near the choir.
