The Cromhout House features a double-width facade topped by a distinct, ornate neck gable that rises above the neighboring canal houses. Jacob Cromhout, a wealthy merchant, commissioned this structure in sixteen sixty-two to showcase his family wealth. He hired architect Philips Vingboons to connect four separate plots into one grand residence. During the eighteenth century, the house gained notoriety when the Dutch East India Company director, Daniel Cromhout, turned his private collection of curiosities here into a popular attraction for visiting aristocrats.
