Walter Suskindbrug

The Walter Suskindbrug is a drawbridge spanning the Nieuwe Herengracht with two white lanterns mounted on its iron railing. It connects the Jewish Historical Museum area to the neighborhood where Walter Suskind lived. During the German occupation, Suskind used his position to coordinate the escape of hundreds of children from the nearby Hollandsche Schouwburg. He forged transport lists and diverted families to safe houses while pretending to assist the Nazi deportations. The bridge bears his name to mark that quiet, calculated defiance.
