The Plantage Muidergracht is a narrow canal lined with stately nineteenth century brick townhouses that once served as the edge of Amsterdam’s Jewish Quarter. In the nineteen forties, the occupants of these houses faced mass deportations, and many homes stood empty for years after the war. Scientists from the nearby University of Amsterdam eventually claimed these abandoned buildings for laboratories and research facilities, turning the quiet canal side into an intellectual hub while the scars of the neighborhood’s displacement remained visible in the architecture.
