Zeedijk

The Zeedijk is a narrow, curving street defined by the centuries-old dike that once protected Amsterdam from the Zuiderzee. It served as the primary sea wall for the medieval city, separating the harbor from the dry land where sailors and merchants lived. Sailors offloading cargo here in the sixteen hundreds often spent their wages in the street’s taverns before heading back to sea. Today, the street retains its distinct, crooked path, physically marking where the water stopped and the city began.
