Wanjuan Building

The Wanjuan Building features a tiered, octagonal roof covered in glazed, forest-green tiles that catch the mountain sunlight. This structure serves as the centerpiece of the Mu Family Mansion. It was built during the Ming dynasty as a library for the Tusi lords, the local chieftains who ruled Lijiang with the emperor’s blessing. They stocked the shelves with thousands of books and maps to manage their trade routes. Mu Zeng, a poet and lord in sixteen twenty-four, sat here writing his verses while scholars debated administration.
