The Mu Mansion is defined by its dramatic roofline, where heavy, curved eaves of dark tile rise above a bright red gatehouse tucked against the slope of Lion Hill. This was the seat of the Mu clan, hereditary rulers who governed Lijiang for over four hundred years under the Ming and Qing dynasties. When a Qing official once questioned the scale of these buildings, a Mu chieftain claimed his wealth was spent on wood and stone to build a legacy, not on war.
