The White Stork Synagogue

The White Stork Synagogue features a high, light-filled hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and two tiers of arcaded galleries. Completed in eighteen fifty-four, this building served as the spiritual center for the city’s Reform Jewish community. During the nineteen thirties, the Nazi regime seized the property, turning it into a garage and workshop. Decades later, Isaiah Shachar famously discovered the original floor buried beneath layers of concrete, marking the start of a long effort to reclaim the space for prayer and music.
