The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist features two mismatched spires clad in sharp, angular copper, standing nearly three hundred feet above the Ostrów Tumski island. This brick structure replaced a sequence of smaller churches dating back to the tenth century. When the Red Army laid siege to the city in nineteen forty-five, the roof collapsed and the interior burned, melting the lead windows. Workers found the cathedral nearly gutted, yet the massive stone altar remained standing amidst the rubble of the nave.
