The Gyeongju Choe Family Academy sits behind a long stone wall in Gyo-dong, distinguished by its weathered wooden gate and the tiled roofs of the traditional hanok structures within. For generations, the Choe clan lived here, practicing a strict family rule that mandated they share their wealth with the community. When a famine struck in the seventeenth century, the family opened their granaries to starving neighbors. They maintained this practice for three hundred years, keeping their own household consumption modest while feeding the region.
