봉황대

Bonghwangdae is a massive, grass-covered mound that rises abruptly above the surrounding neighborhood streets. It is the largest ancient tomb in Gyeongju, dating back to the Silla Kingdom. While most royal burials in the area were long ago identified as belonging to specific kings, the person resting inside this enormous earthwork remains anonymous. Local residents once climbed its slopes to picnic or gaze over the city, and a single, gnarled zelkova tree has grown from its peak, weathering the centuries alone.
