This gravel square serves as the town’s primary threshold, replacing the quiet village atmosphere with a constant bustle of arriving hikers and departing goods. In the nineteenth century, the arrival of the railway transformed Zermatt from a remote mountain hamlet into an international destination. The station remains the only point of entry for the heavy electric trains that connect the valley below.
