Matterhorn Museum - Zermatlantis

The Matterhorn Museum sits below the ground, recognizable by the translucent, pyramid-shaped glass skylights protruding from the town square. This subterranean space reconstructs an entire nineteenth-century village, using the original wooden houses and barns saved from Zermatt’s rapid modernization. Its center holds the frayed, snapped rope from the first 1865 ascent of the Matterhorn. That day, four men fell to their deaths when the line broke, leaving three survivors to face accusations of sabotage while the world fixated on the mountain.
