Mountaineer's Cemetery

historic

The Mountaineer's Cemetery sits behind the gray stone walls of the Saint Mauritius Church, marked by an iron gate and the distinctive, weather-beaten ice axes that top many of its headstones. It holds the graves of climbers who died on the Matterhorn and neighboring peaks. One grave belongs to the Reverend Charles Hudson, who perished in the first ascent of the Matterhorn in eighteen sixty-five. His body was never found, so his family placed a memorial plaque here to hold his memory.
