Cavalry of the Empire Memorial

The bronze statue you see before you is a literal piece of the conflict it commemorates. The sculptor, Adrian Jones, cast the figure of Saint George from weapons captured by cavalry units during the First World War. Jones himself was an army veteran who served as a veterinary officer in several nineteenth-century campaigns, bringing a unique, firsthand understanding of horses to his work. If you look closely at the dragon beneath the horse's hooves, you will notice it sports a distinctly upturned Germanic moustache, a detail added by the artist to symbolize the enemy defeated in the Great War.
