Hyde Park

King Henry the Eighth claimed this land from the monks of Westminster Abbey in fifteen thirty-six to transform it into his own private deer hunting ground. It remained an exclusive royal preserve until sixteen thirty-seven, when King Charles the First opened the gates to the general public. This decision effectively converted the space into one of the earliest examples of a public park anywhere in the world.
