Bermondsey Medical Mission

The Bermondsey Medical Mission was established in 1904 by Dr. Selina Fox, a pioneer in medicine who sought to bring affordable healthcare to one of London's most impoverished districts. At the time, she was a rare female physician in a field dominated by men, and she insisted that her mission be staffed entirely by women. She operated out of a property on Grange Road built on the site of a former burnt-out factory and a ruined stable. Her work became legendary in the neighborhood, as she and her voluntary helpers were frequently seen walking through the narrow alleys and crowded courtyards of Bermondsey to visit patients who had no other access to medical care.
