Maltby Street Market

Maltby Street Market occupies a narrow, historic passageway known as the Ropewalk. Long before the food stalls arrived, this site was a genuine ropewalk where workers produced rigging and cables for London's shipping industry. You can still see the industrial bones of the area today in the surrounding brick railway arches. These arches were built between eighteen thirty-six and eighteen thirty-nine for the London and Greenwich Railway, which holds the title of the world's first elevated steam railway.
