The Coronet theatre at 28 New Kent Road in Elephant and Castle has occupied this specific site since 1879. It began as the Elephant and Castle Theatre, a grand venue where a very young Charlie Chaplin once performed on stage. The building that stands here today, however, was later rebuilt in an Art Deco style to serve as a cinema, eventually featuring a massive screen and a specialized organ designed to rise from the orchestra pit.
