Burdett-Coutts Memorial Sundial

The Burdett-Coutts Memorial Sundial stands as a towering Gothic monument of Portland stone and granite in the heart of the St Pancras churchyard. Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts commissioned this structure in the late nineteenth century to serve as a permanent record for individuals whose graves were displaced by the encroaching tracks of the Midland Railway. The railway cutting sliced through this historic burial ground in eighteen sixty-five, leaving countless remains without their original markers. By erecting this obelisk between eighteen seventy-seven and eighteen seventy-nine, the Baroness ensured that those disturbed souls were not entirely forgotten by the public.
