Bunhill Fields

You are approaching Bunhill Fields, a site whose name carries a grim secret. The term Bunhill is widely considered a corruption of Bone Hill, and the nickname refers to a period in the mid-sixteenth century when the charnel house at Saint Pauls Cathedral was demolished. Over one thousand cartloads of skeletal remains were transported here from the city, piled up, and covered with a thin layer of soil. The mound grew so significant that three windmills were eventually constructed directly on top of the heap to catch the breeze.
