Fortune Street Park

Before this land became a public park, it served as a burial ground for the nearby Saint Lukes Hospital for Lunatics. Opened in the mid eighteenth century, the site provided a final resting place for patients who had no family to claim them. The ground functioned this way for over a hundred years until the closure of the cemetery in the mid nineteenth century. The transformation into a green space allowed the area to move away from its somber origins while maintaining a quiet, secluded character within the dense city.
