Pearce and Plenty was a pioneer of the fast-casual dining movement in London, established in the late nineteenth century to feed the city's booming working-class population. Its founder, John Pearce, began as a simple coffee stall operator before building a massive empire of refreshment rooms designed to provide rapid, nutritious, and affordable meals to laborers. The company operated under the motto Quality, Economy, Despatch, and its venues were specifically engineered to provide a sober, efficient alternative to the local pub. These establishments became a staple for city workers, serving hearty dishes like steak pudding and beef pie alongside coffee, tea, and cocoa. At their peak, these restaurants fed tens of thousands of people daily, fundamentally changing how the urban workforce ate during their limited midday breaks.
