Beatrix Potter Plaque

Beatrix Potter was born in 1866 at two Bolton Gardens, a house that once stood on this very site. During her decades living here, she maintained a private menagerie in her schoolroom, filling the space with mice, hedgehogs, and rabbits. These animals became the real-life models for the characters that would later achieve worldwide fame. She kept her childhood home until her marriage in 1913, and it was within these walls that she penned early classics such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tailor of Gloucester. The original family home was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but the plaque marking its history remains on the fence of the primary school that now occupies the ground.
