Euston Square

Euston Square is named after the ancestral home of the Dukes of Grafton, who owned much of the land here in the nineteenth century. The square itself was laid out in the eighteen twenties as part of the northward expansion of London, but the area was originally conceived for a much more rustic purpose. Decades before the trains arrived, this stretch of road served as a route for driving cattle and sheep toward the meat markets at Smithfield, keeping livestock away from the crowded streets of the city center.
