London and North Western Railway War Memorial

The London and North Western Railway War Memorial stands as a reminder of the massive human cost shouldered by the railway workforce during the First World War. When the conflict broke out, over thirty-seven thousand employees of the London and North Western Railway—roughly one-third of the entire company—left their jobs to join the military. By the end of the hostilities, three thousand seven hundred and nineteen of these men had lost their lives. To honor their sacrifice, surviving colleagues and the company funded this thirteen-meter tall Portland stone obelisk, which was unveiled in October nineteen twenty-one.
