London Colosseum

The London Coliseum opened on Christmas Eve in 1904 as a deliberate attempt to build the finest people's palace of entertainment in the city. Its creator, the impresario Oswald Stoll, worked with the celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham to construct a venue that prioritized both grandeur and comfort for a wide audience. To achieve this, the building was fitted with early electrical lighting and was among the first theatres in Europe to offer elevators for patrons to reach the upper seating tiers. Even today, the theatre retains the widest proscenium arch in the West End, a signature feature of its ambitious Edwardian design.
