John F. Kennedy Memorial, London

This bronze bust of President John F. Kennedy was created by the renowned Lithuanian-American sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and unveiled in May 1965. Its existence is the result of a massive grassroots effort by the British public, as more than fifty thousand readers of the Sunday Telegraph newspaper contributed to the project. In an unusual move to ensure broad participation, donations were strictly limited to one pound per person. The sculpture originally stood on a polished black granite pedestal along Marylebone Road for over fifty years before moving to its current location in the lobby of the International Students House. You can still view it through the glass doors, which were opened to the public after the original bronze was damaged by vandalism in 2017.
