Islington Green War Memorial

monument

The Islington Green War Memorial that you see today is actually the successor to a structure that locals expected to be temporary. In nineteen eighteen, a local philanthropist named Charles Higham erected a simple concrete obelisk here to honor the fallen, assuming a more permanent monument would soon take its place. That original, modest pillar ended up standing on this site for nearly ninety years before it was finally removed in two thousand six during a major regeneration of the green.
